      Re: Mercedes autonomous drive

Why not use similar technology to improve current traffic flow issues?

11 years ago I had a couple similar ideas. First, electronic coupling/linking of cars + Autonomous accelleration and braking. Primarily used to overcome the latency reaction times of humans when stopped at traffic lights or in stop-n-go heavy traffic.

My second idea (also 11 years ago) was smart traffic lights that could actually see traffic flow and volume real time and adjust accordingly.

Obviously both ideas were already patented but AFAIK never developed into usable products.
Over thinking, over analyzing separates the body from the mind.

I like driving, I would not like the experience of a car that drives itself.

If they can ever figure out the fly problem, I am waiting for teleportation pods to become reality.

Seriously I would give up driving in a second if something could get me where I am going while I can maintain my natural state of sloth.

I thought some of this technology in very limited ways is now coming online. I believe I have seen commercials of cars overriding the driver if they are about to hit something "visible" to the car. I have no idea how well it works and in what conditions, but thought some of that was a bit more real.

On the subject of coupling / linking, I thought everyone was hoping that is what Dean Kamen might be coming out with in the overhyped mystery leadup to what became the announcement that was......alas....... when the curtain came up......the......wait for it.......drum roll.......Segway.

Watched Motoring 2013 last night, they test drove the new Mitsubushi Outlander.

Driver drove at an obstacle, never took his foot off the gas and the vehicle stopped on is own.

The Mercedes video was cool, but it looks more stressful than just driving the car for yourself, the way he always had his hands hovering over the steering wheel in case there was a problem.

Ha ha dude... It's a test research project... It's not what they would intend in real life application...

In fully realized usage it would simply & safely drive itself...
The test required someone to be there to override...

I wonder how it would perform on our amazing roads.

The roads in Europe seem to be marked and maintained much better than here.

If the car is using sensors to see markings we'd end up in the ditch. Lol
