    2024 Blue Jays

Starting this as I see little value in an off season specific thread.
When does it end spring training or maybe opening day?

If anyone wants to postmortem the 2023 season, there is a thread for that.
I would rather talk about moves and topics that affect the 2024 team.
Entire organization needs to learn from 2023.

Free agent class doesn’t seem very strong for 2024.
Jays almost need a Barger, Martinez Tiedemann to take a step, or Manoah to get himself right.

Not expecting a huge drop off on the pitching side but see offense continuing to be a challenge.
As a quick thought, would you sign Votto for a year?
No idea what he would want or if he would be interested in playing for the Jays.

Left hand bat that plays 1B.
Not young but would he be fully healthy for 2024.
He had a decent 2021 but then.

“A career-worst 2022 season was halted after 91 games when Votto had surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff and biceps in his left shoulder. He continued to deal with the shoulder's limitations this season after debuting in June.“

With Votto would you trade Vlad Jr or make him full time DH. Not sure he would like that latter

I was thinking of more of a platoon situation.
Personally I’m not ready to give up on Vladdy.

Optimistic he learned somethings this season and will be better in 2024.

Not sure how many games they would get out of Votto at 40.

Please take a moment to remember Tom Cheek who passed away on this date 18 years ago at the age of 66.

An example of a comp for Vladdy.

          “Vlad: 660 GP, 130 HR, .279/.355/.490/.844, 10.1 fWAR

Matt Olson: 575 GP, 142 HR, .252/.348/.511/.859, 15 fWAR w/ OAK prior to extension.

Olson signed for 8 yrs/$168M heading into his age-28 season. So 3 years older, but similar statistics. Vlad would probably want 10+ years though.”

Getting right to it, read something that the 2024 season starts on March 28th.

Looks to me like they may not have any plans for the seats as those look like 40yd garbage bins.

Thought maybe they could repurpose them to another venue, maybe an arena or somewhere looking for an upgrade.

Some stadiums sell their seats to fans.

Is their some loyalty among the Jays administration/front office to Mark Shapiro.

Possibly. Check out just how many people the Jays employ in those types of capacities.

Quite a change from even a decade or more ago.

With all the people involved in the High Performance Department, why were three key players in Guerrero, Manoah and Kirk apparently so 'out of shape' to start the season.

while all 3 are probably quite overweight ( overfat) calling a player " out of shape" based on their somatotype might not always be correct.

a lot of people said same of Phil Kessel for same reasons and from most reports he was one of the fittest guys in pre camp testing. Also reported as same at Gary Roberts offseason camp.

That said, one doesn't know if these players would perform better or worse with losing weight. Remember David Duval ?
Manoah aside and his isn't likely weight related, they don't seem aren't falling prey to injury due their excess weight

You are of course correct that bodyshape/size does not always correlate to fitness.

The great Alexseyev, certainly did not have a body shape that like one associated with most Olympic athletes.
At my physical best my BMI would place me at grossly obese. Based on height to weight ratios.

And certainly pro baseball players have excelled despite 'bad body shapes. Sabathia, Colon, Ortiz, David Wells, etc.

However remember how prior to the 2022 season there was a great deal of publicity and comments regarding how Guerrero was on a conditioning program and would report to camp in top shape? How many similar statements or comments were made prior to 2023?.

And by the end of the season there were reports that Guerrero was suffering from 'knee pain' (MLB.com September 20th)
His knee is barking a little bit,” Schneider said prior to the move being made. “It’s nothing with the patellar [tendon] or anything, he’s just feeling the length of the season.”
Regarding Alejandro Kirk on September 15th the Star published the following quotes from Kirk"
“I don’t care what other people think about it. It doesn’t interest me. And actually no, it doesn’t hurt my feelings when people talk about it,” says Kirk, speaking through interpreter Hector (Tito) Lebron. “I am aware of it.” The weight, he means, 265 pounds on a five-foot-eight frame. “It’s something that I’ve been working on. We, as an entire organization, are working on it. They’re helping me out. We’re going to continue to work on that over the winter.”

But might not a slimming regime harm his hitting power — which, admittedly, has dwindled this season? “No, actually I think I will feel better and it would improve my game."
